Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said on Saturday that she is not afraid that two partners would leave the ruling coalition if her predecessor Ivo Sanader returned to politics, reminding that Sanader said when he resigned in early July that he had no political ambitions
She was responding to the question from the press if she feared that the Social Liberals (HSLS) and the Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS) would leave the coalition with her Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), as they announced, if Sanader returned to politics. Speaking to press at a convention of the Peasant Party (HSS), another ruling coalition partner, Kosor stressed that cooperation within the coalition was excellent. "All partners, the presidents and representatives of the parties, gave me (at a recent coalition lunch) a very clear, firm and unequivocal support in all important projects, from the uncompromising fight against corruption to all economy-related projects as well as in all other difficult decisions, for example on the Christmas bonus (in the public sector". Kosor said the Christmas bonus was a current issue. "It's true that we signed collective agreements and that these agreements say that the amount of the bonus, if not agreed otherwise, is HRK 1,250, but this was signed in another time and this is what this is about. We have to adjust our decisions to the time we live in and the circumstances we are in. And we must set clear priorities. Is the priority the Christmas bonus or the payment of salaries? The priority is definitely the latter." Asked if the HSS, as the HDZ's biggest coalition partner, should support Andrija Hebrang, the HDZ's candidate for president of the republic, Kosor said, "We can't oblige the coalition when it comes to that. But Mr. Hebrang was invited to today's HSS convention and he gave a talk". Commenting on the remark from the press that independent presidential candidate Milan Bandic was at the convention too, Kosor said Hebrang was invited as vice president of the HDZ and president of the party's club of deputies, while Bandic was invited as the mayor of Zagreb.
