Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor on Sunday afternoon visited villages in Brdovec municipality near Zapresic, outside Zagreb, which are facing the threat of the Sava River spilling over its banks, promising that the army would be deployed to help protect the villages from the flood crest that was expected to arrive in the area from Slovenia later in the night.
Kosor visited the villages of Javorje and Kljuc Brdovecki, where a dozen houses have been flooded and some 20 people evacuated.
Kosor thanked local firefighters and members of the Civil Defence helping people in the Zapresic area fight off water that is threatening to break through local dikes.
Soldiers were expected to arrive there later in the evening to help reinforce dikes and assist in a possible evacuation.
