Croatian President Ivo Josipovic has declined to comment on the timing of the opening of an investigation against the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), adding that the investigation is the proof that the rule of law is functioning and that there are no untouchables.
Asked to comment on the HDZ leader and Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor's statement that the launching of the investigation into her party ahead of the election period was no coincidence, Josipovic said on Thursday that he would not comment on "the political moment" of the developments.
"Neither should the investigation be commented on as it is within the remit of the state agencies," the president said. "The investigation is showing that Croatia has said the truth when telling Europe that there are no untouchables."
"The rule of law is functioning and will continue to function," Josipovic said.
