CMC Sisak's new director Joachim Knospe on Tuesday met with unionists from the steel mill, informing them that the management had adopted a decision and would immediately begin implementing a programme to provide for the mill's 1,070 workers.
According to the programme, the workers will receive salaries while they work and during the notice period as well as severance packages of HRK 3,000 per year of service.
Depending on the years of service, the notice period will range from one to four months, during which time the workers will receive a salary, although they do not have to report to work.
Notices will be given gradually, depending on the closure of the mill's plants, and the earliest could be given already at the end of this month. The severance packages are to be paid by the end of the year, by which time the workers have to meet their commitments to the mill's clients.
CMC Sisak will remain in business until it delivers the orders it has taken and production is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The US company CMC bought the steel mill in Sisak in 2007 and said on October 7, 2011 it had decided to exit, either by selling the mill or closing it, which brings into question 1,130 jobs.
Economy and Labour Minister Djuro Popijac met with CMC's representatives in Zagreb last week, saying the company was definitely exiting the steel mill and that they would look for a new partner together.
According to the unionists in the mill, they did not hear any new information today about a possible new owner.
