Proof of no criminal record is not necessary in the selection of census takers because they are not signing permanent employment contracts with the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS), which is why such a certificate was not requested, the DZS said on Tuesday in response to media reports about a census taker from Sveta Nedelja outside Zagreb who was convicted of discrimination on racial and other grounds.
The national statistics office said the census taker in question was no longer taking part in door-to-door census visits and that it would suggest that he be given some other assignment that would not include close contact with citizens or access to the collected information.
Reporting about the census taker in Sveta Nedelja, the Centre for LGTB Equality on Monday accused the DZS of applying no criteria when recruiting census takers.
