Several hundred protestors gathered in front of the parliament and Council of Ministers buildings in Sarajevo demanding an urgent solution to the introduction of identification numbers for citizens and the issuance of relevant documents.

Protestors have blocked the entrances to the buildings and are preventing officials and staff to leave the buildings.

A session of the House of Representatives was cut short at the insistence of MPs from the Bosnian Serb entity of Republika Srpska who claim that their safety is at risk.

The two buildings have in the meantime been surrounded by heavy police forces.

The number of protestors is growing and they insist that parliament immediately adopts a new law on personal identification numbers (JMBG) which would then facilitate the issuance of relevant documents for newborns.

Amongst the protestors are many parents with babies who cannot obtain relevant documents for their children due to a political dispute on how municipal regions that will be responsible to issue ID numbers will look like.

The Council of Ministers on Wednesday adopted an interim decision on the JMBG however protestors fear that once this expires the same problem over ID's and relevant documents will persist.

Serb MPs insist on a new system of issuing JMBG's which will not cross entity borders while Bosniak (Muslim) MPs want the system to remain as it is.
