Several hundred people, including many students, gathered on Friday around 3 p.m. in front of the parliament and government building in Sarajevo to show their dissatisfaction with the situation in the country.

Today's protests were organised by the Student Parliament NGO and the organisation's president, Ahmet Nurkovic, said that the problem with the issuance of personal identification numbers was the main reason for their protest, but they also wanted to point out the difficult position facing students during their studies.

Several dozen policemen are keeping an eye on the situation.

The protests in Sarajevo have turned into a political crisis due to accusations arriving from the Serb entity in that country - Republika Srpska (RS).

Officials in the entity have accused Bosniak political parties of organising the protests in an effort to force legislation on a unified identification number which RS considers to be unacceptable and insist that I.D. numbers be issued separately within each entity.

Also today, the RS government decided that RS officials in state bodies of authority would not go to work to Sarajevo until further notice because they do not feel safe there in wake of the protests.
