The Croatian National Bank (HNB) Council held a meeting on Wednesday that was chaired for the last time by the outgoing Governor Zeljko Rohatinski.

In his farewell address, Rohatinski spoke of the main characteristics of the last 12 years while in office, focusing on his second six-year term which was marked by the stability of prices, currency exchange rates and the banking system against a background of a global financial crisis, according to a press release issued by the central bank.

"I am proud of everything we have done together in the past six years, of the way in which we have been operating, of the way in which we have defended our views, never hiding behind anyone," he said.

Rohatinski rejected views that the policies pursued by the central bank were neoliberal, saying that "in a liberalised system, which we agreed to liberalise the moment we decided to join the European Union, our policy was not liberal, but highly interventionist." He noted that such an interventionist policy had ensured stable foreign exchange rates and that without it oscillations would have been very high.
