MP Zeljko Jovanovic of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) told a news conference in the northern Adriatic city of Rijeka on Tuesday that his party demanded that elections be held in late September - after the successful completion of Croatia's EU entry talks - so that a new government would be able to prepare a quality budget and reforms in 2012.

According to him Croatia with Jadranka Kosor at the helm of the HDZ-led government has irreversibly lost two years in "wondering through non-existing economic recovery programmes".

The SDP believes that Croatia must not lose a single week and demands that the elections be held at the end of September, Jovanovic said.

Jovanovic also said that "the latest story about the unemployment rate going down was nothing but the spin", adding that the fact that 130,000 jobs no longer exist indicate a deep crisis.
