Belgian Foreign Minister Steven Vanackere has said that the issue of forwarding Serbia's European Union membership application to the European Commission will be put on the agenda of the next meeting of EU foreign ministers in October.
"I will put the question of sending Serbia's membership application to the European Commission on the agenda for October," Vanackere said at a news conference in Brussels on Monday after a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
The ministers believe that Serbia's having agreed to cooperate with the EU in drawing up a resolution on Kosovo that was submitted to the UN General Assembly, should be recognised and rewarded.
"Member states expressed the wish not to have this effort left unrewarded," said the foreign minister of Belgium which is currently holding the rotating presidency of the European bloc.
Serbia sent its membership application to Brussels last December.
However, the application has not yet been put on the agenda of the Council of the EU primarily due to Serbia's policy towards Kosovo and its failure to locate and arrest Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic, wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
The Kosovo resolution, co-sponsored by Serbia and the EU, was adopted by the UN General Assembly last Thursday.
