Several hundred residents of the southern coastal city of Split on Saturday marched from the city's waterfront to Marjan hill overlooking the city to pay tribute to Mexican tourist Selena Margarit Graciano Macedo who was killed there 25 days ago.
The march was organised via the online social network Facebook by architect Darko Radovic, who said: "In this way we are trying to bring back calm to people's hearts. Today Split has shown its other, warm face."
Marchers were carrying olive branches and white roses and were joined in prayer by tourists who were visiting Marjan, a popular picnic and recreation spot. From there they issued a message to Macedo's parents, saying they were praying for her peace and were confident that the police would find her killer.
Selena Margarit Graciano Macedo, 31, disappeared on Marjan on August 22 after she parted company with her brother Emanuel, wishing to go to the top of the hill to take pictures of the city. Since she did not return by evening to the hostel where they were staying, her brother alarmed the police and a search for her began that same evening, involving a large number of rescue workers and police. Her lifeless body was found on the top of the hill on August 25.
