UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage, currently meeting in Bali, Indonesia, has added seven new inscriptions to the Intangible Heritage Representative List, including "Nijemo kolo" and "Slavonski becarac" from Croatia, French news agency AFP said on Sunday.
"Nijemo kolo" is a silent circle dance performed by communities in the Dalmatian hinterland of southern Croatia, while "Slavonski becarac" is a style of singing and playing popular throughout eastern Croatia and deeply rooted in the cultures of Slavonia, Baranja and Srijem.
The latest additions brought the number of Croatian inscriptions on the Intangible Heritage list to 12. The others are: the annual carnival bell ringers' pageant from the Kastav area; the festivity of Saint Blaise, the patron of Dubrovnik; the Sinjska Alka, a knights' tournament in Sinj; ojkanje singing; lacemaking in Croatia; gingerbread craft from Northern Croatia; two-part singing and playing in Istria; the spring procession in Gorjani; the Maundy Thursday procession on the island of Hvar; and traditional manufacturing of children's wooden toys in the Zagorje region of northwestern Croatia.
