Five Croatian trade union federations on Thursday supported the proposal by the non-governmental election-monitoring organisation GONG that the referendum on Croatia's accession to the European Union, scheduled for January 22, should be postponed for a month due to legislative shortcomings and citizens' lack of information about the EU.
The federations recalled that they had agreed with the former government that a so-called "referendum on referenda" should be held at the same time as the referendum on EU membership. They said they expected the new government to abide by the decisions, agreements and arrangements reached between the former government and the trade unions, adding that it was a matter of the government's credibility in the areas of social dialogue and partnership.
The trade unions believe that the referendum on such an important issue as EU membership is being held on short notice and should therefore be delayed.
