Varazdin Mayor Ivan Cehok was remanded in custody for another two months on Friday, while entrepreneur Davor Patafta, another suspect in the case, offered the highest bail in the history of the Croatian judiciary, HRK 12 million.
If the local court rejects in the coming days the appeal against the bail filed by the Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK), Patafta will be released from custody.
Cehok was remanded in custody to prevent him from repeating the crime and tampering with witnesses.
USKOK yesterday expanded its investigation into Cehok, launched a month ago, on suspicion of abuse of office and defrauding the Varazdin city budget of HRK 29 million. The third suspect in the case, Narcisa Huljev, an executive in one of Patafta's companies, was also remanded in custody.
