War Veterans' Affairs Minister Predrag Matic on Monday called on residents of Vukovar to defuse the situation after protesters forcibly removed dual Latin and Cyrillic signs from government buildings in the town, saying that a solution could be found to everyone's satisfaction using democratic means which required good will and peace.
"I am very sad about what is going on in Vukovar. In the 1990s Croatian defenders fought to ensure respect for Croatian laws, but respecting laws does not suit some people. However, the law is the law," the minister said during a visit to the southern coastal city of Split.
"A situation in which Croatian veterans use violence against Croatian police and vice versa is more than devastating," Matic told the press in a comment on today's events in Vukovar.
"There are ways and methods how to resolve this. We fought for democracy and the rule of law. Good solutions will be found, but that requires peace," he said.
