Several thousand people gathered in Zagreb's central square on Saturday to protest against, what they say was an unfounded persecution of Croatian war veterans and intolerable and neglectful attitude of the government which is supposed to protect veterans from persecution.

The protest was organised by the initiative "Stop Persecution of Croatian War Veterans" which comprises several veteran associations.

"With this protest, we want to mark the day of Croatia's international recognition and warn the prime minister and parliamentary deputies that by fighting in the Homeland War we enabled them to sit in the comfortable seats they do not deserve and to receive salaries they do not deserve and they are locking us up and ignoring and treating us with arrogance," initiative coordinator Boris Prebeg said at the protest.
