The Vukovar-Srijem County Police Department said on Thursday that armed masked perpetrators had broken into an apartment and slightly injured a 52 year old woman on Wednesday evening but did not wish to confirm that the woman in question was the wife of Vukovar Mayor Zeljko Sabo.
Media reported that the wife of Mayor Sabo was attacked in their apartment while she was home alone.
Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic later said that the police were investigating the attack on Mayor Sabo's wife and that Sabo had been given police protection.
"If this was a political message then all I can say is that I will be persistent in stamping out economic crime in Vukovar", Sabo said.
