Zagreb Police Chief Goran Burusic has tendered his resignation after news on Tuesday that his son was under investigation for allegedly issuing false information related to loan approvals.
"After hearing that one of the suspects of fraud is a member of my immediate family, despite the fact that I did not know of, nor in any way involved in the offence, due to moral obligations toward citizens and colleagues, I have offered my resignation to my minister" Burusic said on Wednesday.
The Interior Ministry on Tuesday had reported that the police directorate in cooperation with the Zagreb public prosecutor was investigating a person for fraud who was a "close relative" to Zagreb's police chief.
The Vecernji List daily reported that Burusic junior "jumped in by issuing fraudulent documentation" when clients did not meet the required conditions to be given a loan and "found them guarantors employed in government administration".
The daily added that it was the guarantors in fact that "fell victim because they had to pay back bad loans". Burusic junior is suspected of receiving a commission for his deeds.
