A bomb disposal expert Marko Odzak (43) died on Wednesday after being seriously injured in an explosion while clearing mines in the military base in Knin, about 50 kilometres inland from the coastal town of Sibenik.
Two of his colleagues suffered minor injuries. One has been detained in Knin Hospital while the other has been released after receiving treatment.
Since 1991, there have been 1,348 incidents involving land mines left over from the 1991-1995 war, with 1,975 people being injured or killed, including 205 bomb disposal experts, according to data provided by the Croatian Mine Action Centre.
Among the casualties, 315 suffered lesser injuries, 1,120 were seriously injured and 509 were killed.
