Borut Pahor was sworn in at a formal session of Parliament on Saturday as the fourth President of Slovenia since the country gained independence in 1991.
Pahor won 67% of votes in an election runoff early this month.
In his inaugural speech, he said that Slovenia was hit hard by the economic crisis, but expressed optimism that the country was able to overcome it provided that all political parties reached a broad consensus on necessary economic measures.
"Either we shall all succeed or we shall all be losers," he said, noting that Slovenians were "the best in the toughest situations" and that he was confident that they could "beat the crisis together."
His inaugural speech was mostly dedicated to internal issues and the crisis and he did not comment on foreign affairs, but he noted that Slovenia needed "good and friendly relations with all four of its neighbours."
A 49-year-old political scientist and former Prime Minister, Pahor will formally take over the presidential duties from the incumbent Danilo Tuerk on Sunday.
