The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) on Wednesday called on national judiciaries in the region to prosecute war crimes committed in the aftermath of Operation Storm in Croatia and those committed in Kosovo and which were identified during ICTY trials.
Commenting on numerous reactions on the tribunal's ability to serve justice, following the acquittals in the cases "Gotovina and Markac" and "Haradinaj, Balaj and Brahimaj", Brammertz said in his regular annual report to the United Nations Security Council in New York that there was no doubt that severe crimes have been identified during trials and victims of those crimes had the right to justice.
Therefore I encourage national judiciaries in the region to continue their efforts in prosecuting war crimes and strengthen regional cooperation on those issue, Brammertz said.
He said that the cooperation of Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina with the ICTY was satisfactory.
