First Deputy Prime Minister Radimir Cacic said on Thursday that the government would invite applications for the appointment of a consultant to assess the possibility of granting concessions for the operation of the motorways.
Cacic made the statement while responding to questions from the press after a government meeting. He was also asked to comment on calculations showing that the government of the late SDP prime minister Ivica Racan, in which he had served as a minister, was responsible for a tax debt of 14 billion kuna.
Cacic said that the present government was doing its best to reduce the tax debt, and that the Racan government had also put in a lot of effort to do the same. He said that the Racan government had resolved the problem of illiquidity by adding some of the debt to public debt and by writing off some of the debt, while some of the companies went into receivership.
"That was one of the positive results of the Racan government. Illiquidity was reduced by three quarters. It was a fantastic result," Cacic said.
