The presidents of Bulgaria and Croatia, Georgi Parvanov and Ivo Josipovic respectively, on Monday supported the international operation aimed at the protection of civilians from Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's forces, announcing that Bulgaria and Croatia would participate in accordance with their possibilities, primarily in the prevention of a humanitarian disaster.
"Croatia is a UN member state and we are bound by the Security Council's Resolution 1973 on Libya. Croatia supports all measures that are necessary for the implementation of the said resolution," Josipovic told a news conference he held with Parvanov, who is on an official visit to Croatia.
Josipovic added that military measures were the last resort and a necessary evil, expressing hope the intervention would be over as soon as possible. He also expressed hope the objectives of Resolution 1973 would be carried out as soon as possible, adding that he was primarily referring to the prevention of a humanitarian disaster and the establishment of a reasonable reform direction in Libya.
"Croatia, also as a NATO member state, will take part in the adoption of necessary measures and in accordance with its possibilities, it will contribute to it," Josipovic said, adding that he was primarily referring to relief measures.
Parvanov said he agreed with Josipovic that it was necessary to carry out Resolution 1973, adding that Croatia and Bulgaria would, according to their possibilities, help contain a humanitarian catastrophe.
When I said this operation was late, I meant that for years double criteria had been applied to dictators, Parvanov said. He added that Bulgarians had been aware of Gaddafi's temper for a while and they had been appealing on the international public to take a more active position and prevent his policy.
Josipovic and Parvanov also talked about Croatia's EU entry talks. Both heads of state expressed hope Zagreb would join the bloc in 2013.
Bulgaria actively supports Croatia on its path to the European Union, we support the wrapping up of Zagreb's EU entry talks as soon as possible and we want Croatia to ratify an Accession Treaty as soon as possible. Bulgaria will be among the first countries to ratify Croatia's Accession Treaty.
