Croatia's Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry is closely following the situation in Syria, and according to available information all Croatian nationals in that western Asian country are well and none of them has asked for consular assistance, the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

Croatia's Embassy in Cairo covers Syria and Croatia has an honorary consul in Syria with whom the ministry is in close contact.

Croatian ministry officials have held a meeting with representatives of Croatian companies operating in Syria and warned them about possible deterioration of the situation in that Arab country.

Them ministry notes that it is up to the companies to decide on possible evacuation of their workers from Syria. Locations where Croatians are working are safe so far.

In the event of the further deterioration of the situation, the ministry will, in cooperation with the Croatian embassy in Cairo and the honorary consul in Syria, take appropriate steps to protect Croatians in that Middle East country.

Currently, there are some 300 Croatians in Syria, most of whom (some 250) are there because of jobs.

The riots against President President Bashar al-Assad began on 18 March and since then a great number of people have died in protests.

According to the ministry's statement released on its web site, the Croatians are cautioned against travelling to Syria due to demonstrations and protests throughout the country.
