Tourism Minister Darko Lorencin on Monday said in Rijeka that the last formal obstacle to the construction of a golf course on the plateau of Srdj hill above the southern coastal town of Dubrovnik had been removed, after Sunday's referendum on the matter did not pass a turnout threshold of 50%, given that only 31.5% of eligible Dubrovnik residents appeared at the polling stations.
He said that it would have been bad for Croatia's entire investment climate, had the referendum turned out differently, underscoring that all relevant world media were focussed on its outcome yesterday.
Citizens showed that they support the project and I believe that it will be realised within the framework of the set physical plan, Minister Lorencin told a press conference organised by the ruling coalition.
He added that the recently adopted Tourism Strategy until 2020 was a key document which aims at securing Croatia's competitiveness in tourism.
The tourism strategy aims at positioning Croatia among the world's top 20 most competitive holiday destinations by 2020, at increasing accommodation capacities by 8% and raising the portion of high quality hotels in accommodation.
We do not consider that this is overambitious, he said, adding that it was necessary to concentrate of extending the tourism season where culture tourism, events, sports and recreation play a significant role.
