The main hearing in the case of Dragan Paravinja on attempted rape charges at a court in Sokolac, Bosnia and Herzegovina, ended on Tuesday, with an expert witness describing Paravinja, who is suspected in Croatia of killing teenage girl Antonia Bilic, as a manipulative person.

The girl who Paravinja tried to rape in the Jahorina area in 2002 also testified today behind closed doors.

Expert witness Zorica Lazarevic, a psychiatrist, described Paravinja as manipulative and prone to lying but concluded that he was not mentally ill.

She said Paravinja was not mentally disturbed or sick but aware of the consequences during the 2002 attempted rape. She described him as intellectually above average but socially deviant, with no feelings of guilt or remorse.

Lazarevic said Paravinja had shown signs of poor socialisation already in childhood, which continued as he developed, resulting in the attempted rapes of which he was accused in Bosnia and Serbia.

Unhappy with Lazarevic's findings, Paravinja requested a new psychiatric evaluation but the court refused.

During the hearing, the prosecution presented physical evidence linking Paravinja with the 2002 rape attempt in the Jahorina area.

Paravinja is waiting for the Sokolac court's ruling in a prison in East Sarajevo, after which he could be turned over to the Bosnian State Court, which has to decide on Croatia's plea for his extradition over the Bilic case.

At Monday's hearing, Paravinja said he did not object to being turned over to Croatia but also claimed he holds Bosnian citizenship. If this turns out to be true, the extradition could become complicated given that Bosnia is not obliged to extradite its citizens, regardless of the crime they committed abroad.

Paravinja has been convicted of rape in Serbia. He holds Croatian and Serbian citizenship. He was arrested in Bosnia on June 26. Yesterday, he denied killing 17-year-old Bilic in southern Croatia although upon his arrest, he said he strangled her while trying to cover up an attempt of sexual assault. Paravinja claimed yesterday that he made the confession in Banja Luka under duress. Croatian police and investigators are still intensively searching for Bilic.
