The president of the Croatian People's Party (HNS), Foreign and European affairs Minister Vesna Pusic, on Friday called on Croatian citizens to go to the polls on Sunday and cast their ballots for Croatian deputies in the European parliament, underlining that this was an opportunity for Croatia to decide how it wants to live in Europe.

"Go to the polls. This is the first opportunity we got to send our elected representatives. They will not be representing the government or parliament, they will be representing Croatian citizens," Pusic said.

After July 1 when Croatia joins the European Union, the European Parliament will adopt many laws which will be applied directly in our country, as if they were adopted in the Croatian parliament, the minister said. "Maybe 12 representatives does not seem a lot in the group of 800 deputies in the European Parliament, but the experience teaches us that if competent and informed people are elected, who prepare for their topics, they can get a majority on their side, notably in the topics that matter for the life of Croatian citizens. This is why you should not underestimate these elections, as you will have to live obeying the rules this institution will adopt," Pusic said.

"This is why it is important that you go to the polls, so that people who will represent us in Europe show how serious and mature Croatia is," Pusic said.
