General Mladen Markac, sentenced by the UN war crimes tribunal at The Hague to 18 years in prison for war crimes committed during and in the aftermath of Operation Storm in 1995, underwent a successful surgery at the University Hospital in Leiden, the Netherlands, at the end of May, the Mikulicic-Loncaric-Bahun-Topic law firm reported on Thursday, saying that Markac was recovering in the prison hospital in Scheveningen.
During an open heart surgery, doctors at the Leiden hospital reconstructed Markac's blood vessels and implanted several bypasses, the law firm said in a statement.
