Croatian Justice Minister Drazen Bosnjakovic closed the international conference "The Impact of EU Membership on the Judiciary" in Zagreb on Friday, saying that the government wanted to see a functioning rule of law in Croatia.

Bosnjakovic said he was pleased with the results of the conference, recalling that Croatia was now in a situation when it had to implement the rules and laws applicable in the European Union.

He highlighted the importance of life-long learning for Croatian judges and state attorneys in mastering the laws that were being adopted and the rules and laws of the EU.

"We have done a lot on the road to the EU, but that's a dynamic process that will never stop. We will constantly be in a situation to learn and change things," Bosnjakovic said.

Paolo Berizzi of the EU Delegation in Croatia also expressed satisfaction with the conference, stressing that EU law would take precedence over national legislation from the first day of Croatia's membership in the Union.

"It's time you began preparing yourselves for that day," he said.

Berizzi said the EU was willing to help Croatia, its courts and its state attorneys in their preparation, adding that enlargement would be successful for the EU and the European Commission only if it was also successful for the new member.
