The 31-men crew of the hijacked ship Hanibal II, including a Croatian seaman, are fine and the ship's owner is trying to get in touch with the hijackers and begin negotiations, the Croatian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
The captain of the ship, which pirates hijacked in the Indian Ocean on Thursday, confirmed to the owner, the Tunisian company Gabes Marine Tankers, that the crew are fine.
The ministry was notified by Croatia's honorary consul in Tunisia, who is following the case together with the Croatian Embassy to Morocco.
The ministry is in contact with Croatian diplomats and the family of the Croatian seaman on the ship. His identity has not been revealed.
The Tunisian state news agency TAP said the ship, sailing under the Panamanian flag, had been transporting vegetable oil from Malaysia to Greece and was hijacked after briefly stopping in the Gulf od Aden.
