More than 420,000 pupils and students go back to school

School in Croatia started on Monday for more than 420,000 pupils and students, while school for nearly 110,000 elementary and high school students in four Dalmatian counties - Dubrovnik-Neretva, Split-Dalmatia, Sibenik-Knin and Zadar County - will start on Monday, September 12.

The four Dalmatian counties asked that the start of the school year be postponed due to warm weather and tourist season.

According to figures of the Education, Science and Sports Ministry, in the first half of September the school year will start for for nearly 530,000 elementary and high school students in Croatia - 352,384 elementary school students and 177,055 high school students.

Compared to last year, in the 2011/2012 school year there will be some 6,000 less elementary school students and 3,800 more high school students.

There are a total of 41, 223 first graders, which is about 1,500 more than last year.
