The Parliament on Friday confirmed the appointment of Domagoj Novokemt as acting director-general of the national broadcaster HRT, following the recommendation of the parliamentary Media Committee for Novokmet's nomination.

The appointment of the 35-year-old Novokmet, an editor at HRT, was supported by 88 members of Parliament, 23 voted against and six abstained.

Under the new HRT Act, adopted last week, the term of an acting director-general can last no longer than six months, after which a director-general should be appointed.

Before the vote, deputies of the opposition Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and the Croatian Democratic Party of Slavonia and Baranja (HDSSB) accused the ruling majority of setting up a politically partisan television.

Deputies from the governing majority responded that the HRT Act and the appointment procedure were in accordance with democratic European standards.

Jasen Mesic of the HDZ criticised the governing majority of ignoring the principle of political consensus and legality in this procedure for acting HRT director-general.

The parliament concluded its 4th session and is to reconvene in September.
