According to the 2011 population census, 15 percent of Zagreb's 798,875 residents are above the age of 65, which makes the population of the Croatian capital very old under the criteria of the World Health Organisation.
According to estimates of the city's Health and Veterans Affairs Department, if the present trend continues, in 30 years' time the share of senior citizens in Zagreb's population will be above 25 percent and the share of children aged up to 15 will fall below 10 percent.
These figures were presented on Wednesday by the department head Lidija Hrastic Novak, who said that the biggest problem was that a majority of jobless residents were aged between 25 and 49.
As many as 52 percent of Zagreb residents have a secondary school degree and 16.7 percent a university degree, and 8,662 live on social security.
