Croatia's President Ivo Josipovic on Friday visited the flood-risk areas in easternmost Croatia where the Danube flood crest arrived on Thursday afternoon, and after touring the region the head of state praised the authorities for having taken all preparatory measures to brace for flooding.

"The area is on full alert. Everything is done what is necessary and what could be done," Josipovic said.

The peak of the Danube flood wave, which hit Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary the hardest, is predicted to reach the eastern Croatian town of Ilok on Sunday and then it will move downstream to Serbia.

Croatia's section of the Danube is some 140 kilometres long.
