Croatia's Foreign and European Affairs Minister, Vesna Pusic, said on Friday that President Ivo Josipovic most likely would not attend the inauguration of new Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic, scheduled for June 11.

"President Josipovic most likely will not attend the inauguration," Pusic said in an interview with Soundset radio, adding that she thought that the Croatian president "took a good stand at this point in time."

"There is no doubt that Croatia and Serbia must cooperate for the sake of the region. Tomislav Nikolic has found himself in a completely new situation, with heavy political baggage that makes his work difficult," she said.

"Regardless of who comes to power, no government, no matter how extremist it may be, can ignore or be against stabilisation of the region and cooperation with the neighbours, and that is one of the signs of progress in any region. For that reason, it is very important for Croatia who holds key positions in Serbia and in all other countries in its neighbourhood. That's why it is also important to us who will form the government and who will be the prime minister. There will probably be room in the future for a rational regional policy that will be of interest not to extremist sentiments, but to a peaceful and dignified life of people on both sides," Pusic said.
