Deputy Parliament Speaker Josip Leko (SDP) is expected to be elected Parliament Speaker on Wednesday, the Social Democratic Party reported on Tuesday. Leko had been acting in the position since the late Boris Sprem fell ill and subsequently passed away on Sept 30.
SDP bench leader Igor Dragovan told reporters that the party had confirmed their decision tomorrow to propose that Josip Leko take over the office of Parliament Speaker. They propose that SDP MP Dragica Zgrebec be elected as the new deputy parliament speaker.
"Today the SDP confirmed that together with our coalition partners we put forward a proposal to the Croatian Sabor tomorrow that Josip Leko be elected the new parliament speaker and that Dragica Zgrebec be elected as his deputy", Dragovan told reporters following a meeting of the party bench.
He said that the election of a new parliament speaker would be put on the agenda for Wednesday and that a decision should be made immediately.
Dragovan added that Leko would be replaced by SDP MP Peda Grbin to chair the parliamentary Committee for the Constitution, Standing Orders and Political System and that Sprem's seat in the parliament would more than likely be filled by Marija Lugaric, currently the Deputy Minister of Science, Education and Sports.
