Serbian President Boris Tadic said on Wednesday he was resigning 10 months before the end of his mandate, clearing the way for joint parliamentary and presidential elections in May when he will run for a new term.

Tadic told the press he would formally submit his resignation to Serbian Parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic Dejanovic on Thursday.

The Serbian media on Tuesday cited unnamed sources as saying that the presidential elections would be called on Wednesday and scheduled for 6 May, when parliamentary, regional and local elections are also scheduled to be held.

The media said the Serbian president informed his closest associates that he decided to cut his mandate short as he was confident it was in the best interest of Serbian citizens to have all elections held on the same day and save money.

According to the media, Tadic will once again be the candidate of the Serbian Democratic Party.

Under the Serbian Constitution, following Tadic's resignation, Parliament Speaker Djukic Dejanovic becomes acting president until the new president steps into office.
