Several thousand protesters gathered outside the buildings housing state institutions in Sarajevo on Tuesday, calling for a solution to the problem of assigning personal identification numbers.

They were joined by students, unemployed people, pensioners, activists of various nongovernmental organisations, and taxi drivers, which caused a traffic collapse in the capital.

Most of the staff left the institutional buildings in the morning fearing a repetition of the hostage situation that had occurred last Thursday, and Serb and Croat officials and lawmakers refused to come to work in Sarajevo claiming that it was unsafe.

Protests began last week following a row over the assigning of 13-digit personal identification numbers, as a result of which a seriously ill baby girl was unable to undergo medical treatment abroad.
