The task of a future arbitration tribunal, which is expected to determine land and maritime borders between Croatia and Slovenia, is also to define Slovenia's junction to the high seas, as the two countries have agreed, Slovenian President Danilo Tuerk said on Thursday.

The claims by the Opposition that Slovenia would lose its status of a maritime nation are entirely unfounded, as the arbitration will define Slovenia's junction to open seas, Tuerk told a news conference in Ljubljana.

He was commenting on the claims that Slovenia would lose its status of a maritime nation and that "horrible things" would happen.

"This isn't correct, because with the solving of the dispute through arbitration, Slovenia's maritime status will be stronger than it is now," Tuerk said.

"The arbitration agreement makes Slovenia's maritime status stronger," he added.
