Former Ustasha police official Milivoj Asner, one of the ten most wanted war criminals by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, died in a Caritas home in Klagenfurt on June 14, the Austrian news agency APA said on Monday, citing the home's director, Viktor Umelko.

Asner, a Croat, was allegedly responsible for the prosecution and deportation of hundreds of Serbs, Jews and Roma when he was the commander of the Ustasha police in Pozega during World War Two.

After the war, Asner took refuge in Austria under the name Georg Aschner. In 1992, he returned to Pozega, living there until 2004, when he returned to Klagenfurt.

In 2005, Croatia indicted Asner for war crimes against civilians and requested his extradition, but Austria turned it down with the explanation that, because of grave dementia, he was not fit to stand trial.
