A bust commemorating Dr Juraj Njavro, a surgeon at the Vukovar hospital during the 1991-1995 Homeland War, was formally unveiled on Wednesday by Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor.
"Juraj Njavro was a great man and humanist," Kosor said, adding that Njavro had saved many people's lives during the war and later inspired hope among displaced residents of Vukovar that they would return to their homes.
Njavro passed away in Zagreb in 2008. During Serb attacks on Vukovar in 1991, he was a surgeon in the town hospital and commander of the medical corps of Vukovar municipality. He served three terms as a member of Parliament, and was also a Minister of Health and the first Minister of Veterans' Affairs (1998-2000).
