Croatia celebrates arrival of 2012 at open-air parties in city squares

Croatians welcomed the new year with open-air parties in squares of major cities and towns, with concerts, firework displays and other entertainment programmes lasting throughout the night between Saturday and Sunday.

Residents of Zagreb were offered concerts in four squares: apart from the traditional New Year Eve programme in the main square "Trg Bana Jelacica", also entertainment events were held in another three squares in the centre of the capital.

Revellers in the second biggest Croatian city packed Split's Riva waterfront for a concert of pop stars.

New Year open-air parties were held also in Rijeka and coastal towns in its vicinity.

Residents of Dubrovnik and tourists in that southern Croatian resort, ushered in 2012 at an open-air party in Stradun. Sixteen hotels in the city also provided guests with New Year entertainment programmes.

Osijek residents ushered in 2012 with waltz-dancing in the main square of that eastern city.
