Croatia's GDP per capita in 2008 stood at 63 pct of EU average

Croatia's gross domestic product (GDP) at purchasing power parity (PPP) per capita was 63 per cent of the European Union average last year, according to figures released on Tuesday by Eurostat.

Croatia has a higher GDP than five EU countries -- Lithuania (62 per cent ofthe EU average), Latvia (57%), Poland (56%), Romania (47%) and Bulgaria (41%).

Of the EU's 12 new countries, Croatia's GDP is below Hungary (64 per cent ofthe EU average), Estonia (67%), Slovakia (72%), Malta (76%), the Czech Republic(80%), Slovenia (91%) and Cyprus (96%).

Croatia's GDP at PPP per capita was 57 per cent of the EU average in 2006,60% in 2007, and 50% in 2005.

Eurostat released figures on the EU's 27 members, three countries of theEuropean Economic Area (Norway, Switzerland, Iceland), EU accession candidatesCroatia, Macedonia and Turkey, and four western Balkan countries --Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and Albania.

Turkey's GDP is 46 per cent of the EU average, Macedonia's is 33 per cent,Montenegro's 43%, Serbia's 36%, Bosnia-Herzegovina's 31%, and Albania's is 26%.

In the EU, the GDP at PPP per capita ranges from 41 per cent in Bulgaria to276% in Luxembourg.
