Dubrovnik mayor Andro Vlahusic and independent councillor Pero Vican were given suspended sentences on Tuesday for abuse of office in the sale of a property on the southern Adriatic island of Sipan and incitement to abuse office.
The County Court in Split sentenced Vlahusic to a year in prison with a probation period of three years while Vican was sentenced to ten months, also with a three-year probation.
Vlahusic was charged with violating the Dubrovnik City Statute because in April 2010 he granted, without the approval of the City Council, a HRK 2 million (EUR 267,000) loan from the city budget to Vican whose hotel company Dubrovacko Primorje had found itself in financial trouble.
Vican was charged with inciting Vlahusic to abuse office.
