The district court in East Sarajevo on Thursday upheld a sentence of two years and 10 months' imprisonment against Dragan Paravinja for rape which a court in Sokolac handed down in July.

The district court said a panel of judges had rejected the appeals filed by the prosecution and the defence as unfounded and upheld the July 15 sentence which found Paravinja guilty of the attempted rape of a woman in the Jahorina area in 2002.

At a district court hearing, the prosecution asked that Paravinja be given a harsher sentence since he was a repeat rapist. He has been convicted of rape in Serbia to four and a half years in jail.

The defence asked that the trial verdict be quashed and that Paravinja be acquitted.

Under a decision by the Bosnian Justice Ministry, Paravinja can be returned to prison in Sibenik, Croatia, where he has been accused of murdering teenage girl Antonia Bilic, as soon as the Croatian Justice Ministry makes a request to that effect.
