The European Commission does not comment on individual cases and expects the Croatian judiciary to act in line with the principle of judicial independence, the spokeswoman for European Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele said on Thursday when asked to comment on the request by the Croatian State Attorney's Office (DORH) to strip former Prime Minister Ivo Sanader of immunity.
We don't comment on individual cases. What we expect of the Croatian legal system is to act in every case in line with the principle of judicial independence and with full respect for the basic freedoms and human rights, said Angela Filote.
Earlier this morning, the Croatian parliament received DORH's request to strip Sanader, now an independent MP, of immunity. The request is classified and the parliamentary Credentials and Privileges Commission could discuss it this afternoon.
The media have reported that he is suspected of abuse of office in the case of the Fimi Media marketing agency.
It was said later that Sanader left Croatia shortly after 11 am.
