European Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele has called on political leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina to finally start behaving honourably and meet the commitments they have undertaken.
I expect the institutions and the political leaders to insist on honour and the commitments they undertook more than a year ago, he said in Friday's Dnevni Avaz daily.
Speaking ahead of a meeting between European Union officials and the leaders of the key political parties in Bosnia, to be held in Brussels on October 1, Fuele said everyone in the EU expected this not to be just another routine meeting without concrete results, but an opportunity for Bosnia to make genuine progress towards membership.
This time I would like to see tangible results and not a statement of intentions, he said, adding that this primarily referred to a single mechanism for the coordination of Bosnia-EU relations, otherwise the country could not count on the Union's assistance.
Everyone should realise that this means the possible cancellation of funding for IPA projects in the years ahead, said Fuele.
The other priority task remains the implementation of the Sejdic-Finci ruling to eliminate the discrimination of national minorities from electoral legislation .
Before the question of Bosnia's candidacy status is even raised, the question is how to create the conditions for a credible membership application, which calls for a solution to the Sejdic-Finci issue, said Fuele.
He recalled that the Council of Europe had already said that the legitimacy of Bosnia's autumn 2014 election would be questionable if the existing discriminating rules remained in force. He added that no one should count on the EU changing its rules and treating Bosnia differently than other aspiring EU candidates.
