The Croatian Journalists Association (HND) on Friday called on the Croatian government to immediately jettison its plan to reduce the monthly subscription fee to the Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) as it finds the possible cut to be an attack on public media freedom and the public broadcaster's financial and editorial independence.
Attacking the public media's financial independence is regarded in Europe as direct interference of politicians into editorial autonomy, the HND said in a statement, warning that it would notify the world and European journalists' associations, as well as the European Commission, about the government's intention.
The cabinet of Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor on Thursday proposed cutting the HRT subscription fee of HRK 80 by HRK 20.
