A few hundred environmental activists and local residents on Monday staged a peaceful rally against landfills in the municipality of Viskovo, northwest of Rijeka, and demanded the remediation and closure of all the landfill sites including Visevac, Mariscina and Sovjak.
They warned that the area of Viskovo used to be promoted as a residential area for young generations, however, landfills were now threatening to pollute the environment and local sources of drinking water.
The protesters also accused the responsible agencies of incompetence and negligence in waste management, and said that they would resort to more radical methods if their requests were not addressed.
The police estimated that 600-700 protesters turned out for the rally.
