The "In the name of the family" civic initiative said on Sunday it had collected at least 500,000 signatures for a referendum that would ask if citizens were in favour of amending the Constitution with a provision stating that marriage is a union between a man and a woman.

The initiative said in a statement it would reveal the exact number of signatures collected on Wednesday and that it had been supported by all major religious communities in Croatia, most political parties, many associations and eminent figures.

The initiative said its volunteers were insulted, humiliated and physically assaulted over the past two weeks while collecting signatures. More than 50 attacks were reported to the police throughout the country, mostly in Zagreb and Rijeka.

The statement said the initiative respected the dignity of every person and "is not directed against anyone. We are glad that laws and the Constitution guarantee the protection of civil and human rights to all Croatian citizens, regardless of their nationality, religion or sexual orientation."
